FAQ

How many points do I need to pass?

The passing score is 70 points. With 70+ points you qualify for the Highly Skilled Professional status, and the residence required for permanent residency is shortened to as little as 3 years. With 80+ points it is as little as 1 year.

What is the difference between 70 and 80 points?

With 70+ points the residence required for a PR application is shortened to a minimum of 3 years; with 80+ points to a minimum of 1 year. In both cases you must meet the points at the required times.

How much income do I need?

In the specialised/technical and business-management fields, an annual income of ¥3 million or more is a mandatory requirement (below it, the status is not granted even if you reach the points). Points come from a combination of age and income in the academic/technical fields, and from the income amount in the business-management field.

What is J-Skip (Special HSP)?

It recognises people who meet certain education/experience criteria and a high income as Highly Skilled Professionals without the points calculation. As a guide, the academic/technical fields require a master’s degree or 10+ years of experience plus income of ¥20 million+, and the business-management field requires 5+ years of experience plus income of ¥40 million+.

At what point in time are the points assessed?

In principle at the time of application. To use the shortened PR period you must meet the points at the required times. See the Immigration Services Agency guidance for details.

Can I use this tool’s result for my application?

The result is a guide only. The actual decision depends on your documents and individual circumstances. Please confirm with the Immigration Services Agency or a certified administrative scrivener (gyoseishoshi).
